Le Sergetier | The Serge Weaver
The sergetier, or serge weaver, was an artisan who worked with serge, wool and other fabrics.
Serge is a kind of twill fabric that has diagonal lines on both sides, made with a two-up, two-down weave. The English worsted variety of serge is used in making military uniforms, suits, great coats and trench coats. Silk serge, on the other hand, is used for linings.
The word serge is also used for a high quality woollen woven fabric. The name is derived from Old French serge, itself from Latin serica, from Greek serikos, meaning "silken".
A sergetier could also be called a serger or a sergier, and their place of work a sergerie.
