Le Chevrier | The Goatherd
French long-sawyers ("Scieurs de long dans la montagne de Lure", 2013 painting by Michel Moutte, Wikimedia Commons).
The occupation of chevrier, or goatherd, actually had nothing to do with goats. The so-called goatherd was a long-sawyer, but specifically the one who climbed on top of the log and held the top of the saw. The person on the bottom was called a renardier, or fox catcher.
See the scieur de long, or long-sawyer, page for more information.
Chevrier is a common surname that survives in Canada today.
